North Canyon Medical Center Nearing Completion

North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding is nearing completion with the ribbon cutting and public tours coming up on February 12th. The opening of this new state of the art medical center will benefit not only the community of Gooding, Idaho, but all of the communities in Gooding County and beyond. The communities who will benefit from the new medical center include, Hagerman, Wendell, Bliss, Shoshone, Glenns Ferry, Jerome, Fairfield, and Buhl.

Community College Provides Healthcare Education

The community college in Twin Falls, College of Southern Idaho is helping to alleviate the shortage of healthcare workers. Area communities will benefit from the training many of these students receive who plan to stay in our communities. It is also a benefit for students who are changing careers, either by choice or because of economic factors affecting their jobs requiring that they change careers. The Times News writes, “If you want to know where the rubber meets the road in higher education in Idaho, look north from the College of Southern Idaho campus. There you’ll find the new $21 million CSI Health Sciences and Human Services building, 72,270 square feet full of job potential. . . : : .” Read the enitre article.

Just read an article in the Idaho Business Review about a study that says Idaho’s tax burden is the sixth lowest per capita. Youth Pheasant Hunting Exerience in Southern Idaho

It is great to hear about the efforts of the Idaho Fish and Game to provide youth with opportunities for their first hunt. I like to see our license fees put to such a good use. The experience was highlighted in a story written by Brittnay Cooper published in the October 4, 2009 Times News. “There’s nothing like being outdoors in the fall for a hunting opportunity. For many local children this was their first experience. The Fish and Game provided a youth pheasant hunt experience today in the wildlife management area at Niagara Springs. The weather stayed pleasant and the trek was beautiful as you could see the springs coming out of the canyon.” Video tells about the experience.

Little Wood River Rock Wall Restoration in Gooding Idaho

Exciting news in Gooding, Idaho: Times News reports “Money to rebuild a rock wall along the Little Wood River has made it into the final version of a negotiated bill for funding the U.S. Department of Energy and Army Corps of Engineers…Among funds targeted for Idaho is $100,000 to start rehabilitation of 1.5 miles of lava-rock walls defining the channel the Little Wood River follows through the city of Gooding. The walls are falling apart, posing a number of safety hazards – including increased risk of flooding.”

Agriculture provides stability amid economic downturn

The Magic Valley economy is strongly influenced by agriculture similar the to Treasure Valley. Supply and demand has a large effect on prices as does the cost of production. If it weren’t for this stabilizing force in the area economy we would feel greater effects from the economic downturn. An Idaho Press Tribune article stated, “the Treasure Valley’s agriculture players have continued churning out wheat, meat, milk and other essentials as other industries stumble through their biggest slump in decades. Profit margins are down because of softened worldwide demand during the recession, but employment numbers remain stable, according to Boise State University economist Don Holley.” The entire article can be read at Idaho Press Trubune
