Spring in Hagerman

This last weekend offered a multitude of spring activities in Hagerman. I helped with planting trees in Billingsley Creek State Park. with a large group of volunteers mostly from outside of the Hagerman area. After finishing it we visited the great flea market that is held every Saturday at Billingsley Creek State Park. They have great vendors and I was told that they have as many as 250 visit the market each Saturday. If you enjoy flea markets this a one that you don’t want to miss. I even had a brief message while there that was just what I needed after all that shoveling.

While driving around the valley we witnessed people taking part in many of the great activities available in the area. There were sturgeon fisherman, a group of bird watchers, walkers and fly fisherman. Sunday turned out a little overcast, but we took advantage of the last weekend that the Malad River will be open for fishing until the opening of general season in May. It was a fun day fly fishing on the river with mixed results. Dry flies were hatching and fish were feeding like mad. We weren’t alone as there were several other fly-fisherman who were there also. Twice a group of three kayaking paddled by us enjoying the rough water of the Malad River created by all of the rocks. It really was a beautiful weekend in Hagerman.

Fossil Gulch Wind Park Video Tour

Watching windmills being erected on the horizon has been fascinating over the past few years as the number of windmills have slowly increased. Trucks go through Hagerman with the enormous shaft and blade; so large that only one part per trailer is hauled. From a distance I find the appearance of the windmills on the distant horizon to be very pleasing with their interesting geometric design. Up close they are much larger than anticipated as you can see in this video from Man Source posted of the Fossil Gulch Wind Park. The author said, “this is video of the Wood River Community Advisory Committee trip to the Fossil Gulch Wind Park on January 18, 2007. The site near Hagerman, Idaho, built in 2005, has seven 250′ tall wind turbines which produce a total of 10 megawatts.”

In a presentation to the Greater Twin Falls Association of REALTORS yesterday, Jan Rogers, Executive Director of the Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization said that 160 megawatts of renewable energy is coming out of this region alone into the Idaho Power system.

North Canyon Medical Center Nearing Completion

North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding is nearing completion with the ribbon cutting and public tours coming up on February 12th. The opening of this new state of the art medical center will benefit not only the community of Gooding, Idaho, but all of the communities in Gooding County and beyond. The communities who will benefit from the new medical center include, Hagerman, Wendell, Bliss, Shoshone, Glenns Ferry, Jerome, Fairfield, and Buhl.

Community College Provides Healthcare Education

The community college in Twin Falls, College of Southern Idaho is helping to alleviate the shortage of healthcare workers. Area communities will benefit from the training many of these students receive who plan to stay in our communities. It is also a benefit for students who are changing careers, either by choice or because of economic factors affecting their jobs requiring that they change careers. The Times News writes, “If you want to know where the rubber meets the road in higher education in Idaho, look north from the College of Southern Idaho campus. There you’ll find the new $21 million CSI Health Sciences and Human Services building, 72,270 square feet full of job potential. . . : : .” Read the enitre article.

Just read an article in the Idaho Business Review about a study that says Idaho’s tax burden is the sixth lowest per capita. It is great to be able to live in Idaho where the quality of life is so positive and our tax burden is lower than so many other states. To read more of the article go to Idaho Business Review

Keep Thousand Springs State Park Open

One of the concerns when the State of Idaho bought several properties along Billingsley Creek was the on going maintenance that would be required to keep the properties from becoming weed patches and thus eyesores. The state combined these properties with other parks in the area to form what became known as Thousand Springs State Park. The park is an asset to the community of Hagerman, providing a venue for Blues in the Park, a weekend Flea Market, Annual 1000 Springs Art Show, fun runs, and chamber events to name a few. If the state closes the many segments of this park it is in jeopardy of becoming the eyesore that was feared and thus a detriment to this delightful community. There are enough challenges to small communities in these times, that we don’t need the state to through another cog in the wheel. It is important to find a way to keep the park system open.

A Times News article today says, “everything is on the table as the state of Idaho tries to shrink government services to fit declining tax revenues. But we’d hate to see Thousand Springs State Park — truly one of the Magic Valley’s natural treasures — become one of the casualties. . . . The Thousand Springs complex is a second home for many Magic Valley families during the summer months, and a significant source of income for the Hagerman area. It’s worth saving, even if someone other than the state has to do it.” Read entire article.

Try some yummy Tex-Mex at Thunderbird Restaurant in Hagerman!

Thunderbird Restaurant, located at 120 Main Street West in the scenic town of Hagerman, has great Tex-Mex food with a casual, colorful atmosphere. Shaded outdoor dining is available during the summer months. They also have 2 rooms for private parties. Winter hours are 8 am to 2 pm, Monday through Saturday, however, it is available for catered parties in the evenings. The restaurant is owned and operated by locals, Terry & Janelle Mode. Contact Janelle at 208-837-4949, if you are interested in booking a private group in the evening.

Upcoming for the holidays….. Thunderbird will be hosting a prime rib dinner on Saturday, December 12th. Jane Deal, former chef of the Ein Tisch restaurant in Hagerman, will be preparing this, sure to be delicious, meal. The restaurant will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Happy Holidays!
